Mohali MC Plans To Increase The Dog Pound Area By 5 Acres

After receiving a lot of flak from animal lovers in the tricity regarding lack of post-operative care of sterilized dogs, Mohali administration has announced that they are planning to increase the pound area by 5 acres. This would make the stay of stray animals comfortable before and after sterilization. The additional land extension would be along Industrial area Phase III.

Municipal corporation (MC) joint commissioner, Anvneet Kaur said,

“We have plans to increase the floor area of dog and cattle pound of Mohali. Approximately 5 acres of land right behind the existing cattle pound will be acquired for it. Request for allotting the land to Gmada has also been sent and the proposal has been sent for approval with ministry of local bodies.”

Anvneet said the idea is to give sufficient space to the dogs before and after sterilizations. At present, the stray dogs brought for sterilization are being kept either in cages or in a room.

“We need to give them open space to make their stay comfortable. We will also try not to keep dogs in cages before and after the operative session,” said Avneet.

She further said, some more rooms will also be constructed for state-of-the-art operation theatre and MC has further plans to add a dog hospital to the premises. At present, the dog sterilization and cattle pound are operating from the same plot but separate buildings.

The doctor at the sterilization centre said,

“It is very difficult to handle the residents and keep them away. They keep on coming to claim the stray dogs saying that the dog belongs to their locality and want to feed them every night. We find it hard to make them understand that after sterilizations, we will leave the dog at the same place from where it has been caught. Secondly, we suggest them that if they have to feed the dog then why they don’t adopt those particular dogs.”

At present, around 657 stray dogs have been sterilized this year and 10 to 12 dogs are being sterilized on daily basis now, said MC commissioner Sandeep Hans.
