Man Steals His Own Dog From Animal Shelter After Ex-Wife Abandons It

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s office exploring a case where a man broke into a animal shelter  to take his own dog. Luckily, the man just got his own dog and he break the lock and escaped from the back door, so the damage is minimal. But the Animal welfare says it was all pointless.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, a lady came to Animal Welfare League to drop her dog and told them it was her dog, but it really belonged to her ex-husband.

“So, he got very incensed when she told him that the dog was at the animal shelter and he could pick it up tomorrow, he didn’t want to wait till tomorrow,” Animal Welfare League’s Retiring Director Darla McCammon said.

The Animal Welfare League says soon after closing, the man came back side  of the building, and took a tool they use to keep ice off the sidewalk and used it to break the lock.

“He set off all the alarms, the sheriffs and everybody we’re out here as soon as they could get here. But he managed to get his dog and get out of here and escape,” McCammon said.

The Animal welfare league says  if the man had really waited until the morning things would have been much easier for everyone who are involved in this case.

“’This is your dog? Okay, do you have some proof of ownership?’ and normally they do, they have a picture on their camera or something and so, yeah, we’ll let you reclaim your dog…we would have loved to help him. Now we’re kind of mad at him!” McCammon said.

After returning in to see the damage, the league was glad to find every other dog right where they left them.

“Seemed just fine, they’re just yapping away as happily as they usually do and they’re very well loved today,” incoming Director Katey Zemen said.

To prevent such kind of break-ins, they’re keeping all tools inside which can use to break door locks and  just keeping security system up date.

“This is, again, an isolated incident, it’s something that is very unusual to happen and I think that we have everything in place to be able to apprehend him after the fact,” Zemen said.

The Animal Welfare League at first would not like to press any charges. Police say after the board met, they have changed their opinion.

Investigators think the man left town so they’re presently working with the prosecutors office to decide what charges,if any, they’ll fine.
