BOSTON — The Spencer who was named the Boston Marathon dog died eight days ago, his owners have shared another loss of a golden retriever within the family.
The owners, Rich and Dorrey Powers, disclosed that their 11-year-old dog, Spencer’s niece, who was named Penny, died Saturday with internal bleeding and tumours on its liver and spleen.
The owners said, according to the veterinarian, surgery wouldn’t have given Penny much more time.
“The vet said without the surgery, she would pass in less than 12 hours. We made the difficult decision to help her pass while she was comfortable. “We held her, thanked her, and told her we loved her until her last breath,” the owner, Rich Powers, wrote on social media.

The 13-year-old Spencer was diagnosed with liver cancer in October. It survived cancer a second time and had previously suffered from a tumour in 2020.
Spencer was popular for having the “Boston Strong” flag near Ashland State Park, along the Marathon route.
Penny has been there for Spencer for many years, on the Marathon route.
“You are with your soulmate Spencer with your frisbees and ball,” Rich Powers wrote. “You are forever in our hearts.”
