A Panchkula girl, Pritika Mehta, has come up with a new idea in Tricity to help pet owners by taking care of their dog when they are out of town. She started with by creating a WhatsApp group with name of Friends-and-Family, to look someone in the circle who could keep her dog while the family was away.
She also created a Facebook page, page `How I Met My Dog‘ this February, took the trend to a huge community of dog lovers across the globe. The community is quite popular in the Tricity and connects over 350 people via social media. From dog walkers to full-time caretakers for pets, you find them on this page. They offer services in Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Singapore, etc.
“During family holidays, it used to be tough to leave the dog behind. Either you sent it to dog care or ask close relative to pitch in. But many times, the dog was mistreated or not taken care of well,” Pritika said.
Three years ago, when her parents went to meet her while she was living abroad, they told her about the difficulty of finding a dog-sitter in India.
“It gave me the idea for the friends-and-family WhatsApp group. This year, I scaled it up and was glad to have been able to help so many people.”
Her Facebook page `How I Met My Dog’ is a platform where dog lovers can meet and seek each other’s help. They get in contact with those interested in taking care of their dog when they are out of town. Even those who can’t keep a dog because they are too busy can babysit a pet for some time. Dog lovers from across the Tricity volunteer to play this role. If required, they even provide the pet parent (dog owners) with good veterinarians.
“Whenever we get time from our busy schedules, we take care of the pets in search of a temporary home,” said Sonam Sood of Panchukla, who has joined the Facebook community.
Her husband and she always wanted to keep a dog but couldn’t keep one due to their busy schedules. Now they can bring a pet home whenever they like.
It’s also a chance for students to earn some pocket money.
“If they love to walk dogs, they can make up to Rs 3,000 every month,” Pritika said.
Harmeet Singh Jangla, a pet parent from Mohali, said the community was next planning a picnic for the pets.
