A shelter dog in Orlando that went viral the previous year after a heartbreaking post on Facebook describing the cruel words from visitors is now living a good life.
Dutchess, the dog, was surrendered to Orange County Animal Services near the holidays because of a landlord issue. The owner informed the shelter that she was born with some deformities under her eyes.
According to the shelter, Dutchess was the ideal dog: sweet, energetic, and intelligent.Unfortunately, adopters couldn’t see beyond her cosmetic defect.
“She looks so ugly. What is that? What’s wrong with her? Is she blind? How much is this gonna cost me? She’ll never get adopted,” visitors would say when they saw her, the shelter said.
Orange County Animal Services shared some of her photos on Facebook in the hopes of catching Dutchess’ attention, and it worked.
They got so many applications, and the post was shared with several. Rescue Dogs Dream brought Dutchess on January 10, and the rescue revealed that Dutchess was adopted!
“This FAMOUS sweet girl that no one wanted, and then everyone wanted, found her PERFECT FOREVER HOME!!” the rescue mentioned.
The dog dutchess was given a new name, Lena; she also had surgery to remove the growths under her eyes that were causing her discomfort.
Lena is doing great and “is the sweetest dog they have ever met,” her new family says.
“She now has a new mom and dad to spoil her rotten (Dad works from home), and she has a new brother to play with, in her private fenced yard. She gets to go on hikes and adventures, and she is a cherished part of the family.”
