Coimbatore: Efforts Continue to Curb Street Dogs

Coimbatore: The municipal corporation is preparing an action plan to curb the stray dog danger in Ukkadam and nearby places.

On Saturday, 11 people, including ten children, were bitten by a stray dog. The incident caused widespread anger among locals, who blamed the civic body. The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) staged a rally in front of the corporate office to highlight the problem.

A health department official handled the mitigation of the stray dog menace and said a team consisting of senior corporation officials, health department officials, and the zoo wing is crafting an action plan to curb the menace. “A sustained effort will be launched to control the menace. The action will be replicated in other areas,” he said.

The corporation is also looking for an NGO to continue sterilization at the dog shelter in Seeranaickenpalayam after the former NGO involved in the work left, citing poor payment.

Meanwhile, the aggressive stray dog caught was shifted to the

Ondipudur dog shelter, where its behavior is being monitored. It will be released in the same area after neutering, as animal birth control rules mandate. An official instructed residents not to feed stray dogs.
