Bengaluru Gears Up for Stray Dog Census

Bengaluru is all set to launch a comprehensive census of its stray dog population, with the survey scheduled to commence on 11 July and conclude within a span of 14 days, as confirmed by officials from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

This initiative comes as a follow-up to the previous survey conducted in 2019, which revealed a staggering count of over 3.1 lakh stray dogs in the city.

To ensure the smooth execution of the census, the BBMP’s animal husbandry department has assembled a dedicated team of 100 personnel, who will be divided into 50 teams.

The teams will conduct the enumeration daily from 6 am to 8.30 am. By employing this timeframe, officials aim to capture the most accurate representation of the stray dog population during the designated hours.

Authorities stressed the significance of this census in effectively planning animal birth control programs and assessing their efficacy.

The BBMP has enlisted the participation of 30 members from its own animal husbandry wing, complemented by an additional 70 personnel from the state animal husbandry department. As a token of appreciation, each member involved in the census will receive an honorarium of Rs 5,000.
