Authorities Launch Investigation Following Allegations of Maid Abusing Dog to Fatality

Ongoing investigations are underway following a disturbing incident captured on video, where a woman was observed repeatedly striking a dog on its head and leaving it tethered and suspended from a railing.

In response to inquiries from CNA, the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) confirmed on Tuesday (Feb 27) that it had received reports on Jan 25 regarding an alleged case of animal cruelty within a residential premises.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) highlighted the distressing case on both Facebook and Instagram, revealing the mistreatment of a pet poodle allegedly by a domestic helper.

Images depict the maid hitting the dog while on an apartment balcony, with one distressing photo showing the poodle restrained and hanging from the balcony railing. Regrettably, the dog succumbed to its injuries on Jan 22.

The dog’s owner, preferring to remain anonymous, disclosed to CNA that he had cherished his canine companion for nine years.

Derrick Tan, president of the charity Voice for Animals, shared CCTV footage capturing the woman’s abusive actions towards the dog.

The footage reveals her physically assaulting the dog and using a makeshift object to strike it while it is restrained. Additionally, the dog was leashed and left suspended from the balcony railing.

The owner explained that CCTV cameras were installed as a precautionary measure to monitor the well-being of his dogs due to their absence during work hours.

Upon learning of the dog’s demise from his girlfriend, who the maid informed, the owner reviewed the CCTV footage and witnessed the acts of cruelty inflicted upon his beloved pet.

The maid had been employed for three to four weeks, as mentioned by the owner in his interview with CNA.

SPCA promptly advised the owner to report the incident to the authorities and assisted in gathering evidence and navigating the legal process.

AVS reiterated its stance against animal mistreatment, warning that first-time offenders could face penalties under the Animals and Birds Act, including fines of up to $15,000 (US$11,100), imprisonment for up to 18 months, or both.
