After a Car Accident, Dog Runs a Mile to Reach Doggy Day Care for Assistance

While on her way to a park near Detroit accompanied by her dog, Aries, Melissa Fickel experienced a startling event when another vehicle rear-ended hers as the traffic light transitioned to green.

The impact caused Aries to leap out of the open rear window, surprising Fickel, who noted this behavior as unprecedented for her 4-year-old pitbull lab mix. Although no injuries occurred in the collision, Aries bolted, and Fickel could not chase after her amidst the busy road.

The dog ran out of sight despite her attempts to call out to Aries. Fickel then pulled over and conducted a swift search in the vicinity. Subsequently, police arrived on the scene, and Fickel informed an officer about her missing pet.

Amidst the commotion, Fickel received a text and call from Travis Ogden, the owner of Hounds Town Metro Detroit, where Aries attended daycare weekly. Astonishingly, Ogden informed Fickel that Aries was safe at the daycare, merely a mile away.

Ogden recounted that a staff member had noticed Aries outside the daycare, attempting to gain attention. Once inside, Aries immediately sought out Ogden and showed affection, confirming her identity.

Familiar with Aries’ social demeanor, Ogden was puzzled by her solitary presence but understood upon learning about the accident.

Drawing on studies about dogs’ remarkable sensory abilities and homing instincts, Ogden speculated that Aries fled the accident scene out of fear, seeking solace among familiar surroundings.

Aries was cared for at the daycare until Fickel arrived, which was a relief for Fickel, who expressed gratitude for Aries’ safety in a place she adored.

Reflecting on the incident, Fickel acknowledged the need for better safety measures, intending to equip Aries with a car harness. Despite the ordeal, Fickel’s bond with Aries remains strong, which is evident in their reunion and subsequent celebration with a taco treat.
