History of International Dog Day
Dog lover, family and pet expert, and animal advocate Colleen Paige founded National Dog Day in the United States in 2004. It was adopted into ruling in the state of New York in 2013. She chose August 26 as this was the date she adopted her first dog when she was only ten years old.
What a way to show your pup some love – with a nationally acknowledged holiday! Since then, other dog-loving organizations, countries, and people worldwide have embraced International Dog Day.
Why International Dog Day was started
The purpose of International Dog Day, along with other holidays created by Colleen, is to bring awareness to the condition of animals and to promote adoption. And, of course, to celebrate all dogs around. This day is meant to:
- Acknowledge pups that need to be rescued
- Celebrate dogs that protect us, bring us comfort, and save lives
- Avert people from purchasing dogs from pet stores that support unethical backyard breeders and doggy mills
- Encourage the adoption of dogs in need from rescue centers or local shelters
- rescue dogs from abuse and homelessness
Here are some great ways to celebrate International Dog Day
1. Show your pup how much you love them
Make International Dog Day the day when all your priority is on your dog to show how much you relish their unconditional love and friendship. Take some off from tasks and focus on spending it doing things your pup will love.
Consider what they would enjoy the most. Not every dog is the same, so it might be anything from cuddling up to running on the beach. One of the unique gifts you can give your dog is your time — being with you makes them pleased.
