The dog breed gets its name from- Pomerania. It’s a region in northern Europe. It is where they originated. These dogs are affectionately referred to as Pom Poms or Poms.

These are small dogs and weigh seven to ten pounds approximately. However, they have descended from the sled dogs that are as big as it gets among dogs.

It is hard to believe this, is it not? However, they were not always so little. In fact, at a point in time, they weighed between 20 and 30 pounds before Queen Victoria of England bred them so that their size was reduced to their present size.

These dogs may be small, and their barks may be equally minuscule. However, Pomeranians think they can take on the big dogs and are famous for this trait. Socialize with them from an early age to ease their aggressive behavior. Martin Luther, who led the Protestant Reformation, had a Pomeranian named Belferlein, who was often mentioned in his writing.

The Pomeranian of Mozart was named Pimpernel. He loved Pimperl so much that he dedicated an aria to the same. When Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, he held a Pomeranian by his side. Pomeranians also make for great therapy dogs.

How did Pomeranian originate?

As we have said already, these dogs originated in a province named Pomerania. It is on the coast of the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. Their roots can be traced back to the large sled dogs. This dog breed is said to be a close relative of the following breeds:

  • American Eskimo dogs
  • Alaskan malamute
  • Siberian husky
  • Norwegian elkhound
  • Samoyed

When these dogs were originally bred, they were between 20 and 30 pounds. The small size you see of them now is because of the steps taken by Queen Victoria. She brought one such dog home from her vacation in Florence.

Soon after, she started the process of breeding them in such a way that she could have a lap dog. However, she was not the most famous personality to have been besotted with these babies. The same could be said of Sir Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Martin Luther, and Mozart.

The physical attributes of Pomeranians

These dogs are small in stature, and this is something that they are known the best for. They are seven to twelve inches in height and weigh between three and seven pounds. However, you still find some Pomeranians just as big as their ancestors used to be.

These dogs are said to weigh in the region of 14 pounds. Pomeranians have luxurious puffs of hair around their necks and chests. It is a unique trait of this dog breed. They have a double fur coat on their bodies with a soft undercoat underneath a harsh outer coat.

They do shed a fair bit. But, it is pretty easy to maintain their coat. All you have to do is brush them regularly and bathe them on occasion. The faces of Pomeranians resemble foxes. It is something they are known for as well.

Their ears are triangles, always pointing up, and their tails are feathered and arch over their backs. Their eyes are dark and shaped like almonds. Their coats also come in a wide variety of colors, such as the following:

How are Pomeranians as individuals?

Pomeranians are well-known for how smart, feisty, curious, bold, and energetic they are. Usually, they are rather playful. They always prefer to be the focus of all attention. They are great pets for families. But, if you have small children at home, they may not be the most judicious choice.

They may look like toys but are not good playmates for kids as they might step on them accidentally or handle them roughly. All these things can lead to injuries to these wonderful babies. They have a yappy bark, and they are well-known for the same. However, at times it can get excessive and get on your nerves.

Diseases that Pomeranians may suffer from 

The Pomeranians are normally healthy but remain susceptible to certain conditions. These may be enumerated below:

  • Collapsed Trachea

Things to know while owning a Pomeranian

If you wish to own Pomeranians, you must consider a few things. First and foremost, you must know to keep them healthy and happy. You have to take proper care of your baby when it is hot outside, and the same thing needs to be done when it is too cold for their liking.

If you offer them toys, they should be dog-safe. Ensure they get regular exercise. These dogs need regular brushing to keep their teeth clean. Take them to the vet for wellness care and regular checkups. It includes vaccines, heartworm, flea prevention, neutering, or spaying.
