Woman Gets Beaten Up For Feeding Stray Dogs in Chennai

Recently, a 31- year- old, bank professional, Savithra Manoharan was attacked by a couple for feeding stray dogs and puppies on Basha Street in Choolaimedu, Chennai.

The woman has suffered a head injury and is receiving treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Police has registered a case

The Choolaimedu police registered a case against the couple for harassing the woman and threatening her life.

Savithra Monoharan said that she had been feeding a stray dog and its puppies on Basha Street in Choolaimedu for the past month. When she went to feed the dog and its pups on Wednesday, a man and his wife, who live at 120, Basha Street, accosted her and picked up a quarrel.

They threatened her not to feed the strays

The man told Savithra not to feed the dogs, because the stray dogs and puppies snatch away footwear from outside their house.

Savithra answered to couple that if dogs in the locality were a nuisance or caused him any inconvenience, he should inform the municipal corporation, and the civic body would send its dog squad to sterilize the stray dogs.

“I was polite with the couple. But the man and his wife were very rude,” she said

According to the complaint that she lodged with the Choolaimedu police, when the man said he was “refraining from doing anything” to her only because she was a woman, Savithra lost her patience. An argument followed between Savithra and the couple.

“The man suddenly approached me and, before I could realize what was happening, he pushed me and  I banged my head against a wall,” Savithra said.

According to a constable who reached the spot, the man was drunk when he had attacked the Savithra. Meanwhile, the accused at the police station said Savithra injured herself when she hit her head on the wall.

She was in hospital for treatment and could not lodge a police complaint on Thursday. She filed a complaint on Friday.
