Nominations Open for the 2021 American Humane Hero Dog Awards

Nominations for the 2021 American Humane Hero Dog Awards are now being accepted.

The annual event seeks to honor dogs and puppies from around the U.S.

Dog owners can nominate their pooch for one of seven categories —law enforcement and detection, military, therapy, service, search and rescue, shelter, and guide/hearing dogs.

“Whether they protect us on the battlefield, help us with medical challenges or just lighten our spirits with an enthusiastic kiss after a hard day, dogs save and improve our lives every day,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, American Humane president and CEO. “The American Humane Hero Dog Awards is our way of saluting our best friends and we invite every dog lover to take a few minutes to recognize the love, skill, and loyalty these remarkable animals show us every day by nominating their canine companion.”

Entrants can be owners, handlers, or an authorized entrant of the nominated dog. Entrants must live within any one of the 50 U.S. states or the District of Columbia and be at least 18 years old at the time of entry. One dog per household can be nominated for any one of the seven categories.

Nominations must include a narrative description of 1,500 characters or less and a photo of the dog — no humans or other animals.

Nominations are free to submit.

Nominations will be accepted until noon Tuesday, March 2 with the first round of voting set for March 25 through May 6. The second round of voting is scheduled to begin May 27 through July 15 and the final round of voting will be July 29 through Sept. 7.

The yearlong campaign will culminate in the fall with a premiere of the “American Humane Hero Dog Awards” on the Hallmark Channel that will showcase the top dogs in each category. The show will also announce the American Hero Dog of the year.
