Justice for Jameson: $100K GoFundMe for Dog Killed by LAPD

A celebration turned into a nightmare for one Los Angeles family this past weekend, and now the internet is rallying behind them. A GoFundMe campaign set up for Jameson, a two-year-old family dog shot and killed by LAPD officers in Canoga Park, has already crossed six figures in donations. The page is titled “Justice for Jameson: Help Us Honor His Memory,” and it’s clear from the response that this story struck a nerve far beyond Los Angeles.

What Happened That Night

The Knicks had just beaten the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5, handing New York its first NBA championship in 53 years. Marie Marseille, who’s originally from New York, was celebrating with her family at their condo on Jordan Avenue when things took a sudden, devastating turn.

A neighbor heard screaming coming from inside the unit and called police, worried something was wrong. What they didn’t realize was that the screaming was pure joy. Marseille and her family were losing their minds over the win, and Jameson, a Golden Saint Bernard Doodle mix, was right there with them, dressed in his own little Knicks shirt for the occasion.

When officers showed up just after 8 p.m., they asked Marseille to secure the dog, who was barking at them near the door. She tried. She briefly closed the door, then reopened it to speak with the officers again. That’s when Jameson slipped past her legs and went outside.

Within seconds, according to Marseille, Jameson was shot twice.

Two Very Different Accounts

The LAPD’s version of events says the dog “charged at officers,” which is what led to the shooting. It’s a brief, clinical explanation that doesn’t match what Marseille and her son describe.

“Jameson wasn’t baring his teeth, he wasn’t growling, he wasn’t aggressive, he wasn’t barking,” Marseille said through tears. “He was just moving toward the officer.”

She added that in all the time she’s had him, Jameson has never once shown aggression toward anyone.

Her son, Jeremiah Garcia, wasn’t even home when it happened. He was watching the game at his girlfriend’s place nearby and had called his mother on FaceTime right after the win. That’s when he heard two gunshots through the phone. He rushed home and found Jameson already gone, still wearing the Knicks shirt the family had put on him before tip-off.

Garcia told reporters he couldn’t imagine Jameson lunging at anyone. He described him as playful, not dangerous, and said the idea of him attacking someone simply didn’t track with the dog he knew.

The Aftermath

Cellphone video from inside the condo building captured the immediate aftermath, and it’s hard to watch. Marseille can be heard screaming, “Oh my god! I cannot believe this is happening,” over and over. Footage that later spread across social media shows her on the ground, holding Jameson as he took his last breaths.

That clip alone has been viewed more than 15 million times on TikTok.

A neighbor who lives across the street, Raymon Alvarez, said he heard the screaming first while he was heading out for a walk. He didn’t think much of it at the time. When he came back, he heard what he initially assumed weren’t gunshots, since the area isn’t known for that kind of violence. He was wrong.

Even the neighbor who originally called 911 has spoken about feeling guilty, despite genuinely believing someone was in danger. A memorial has since formed in the hallway where Jameson died, with neighbors stopping by to pay their respects.

The GoFundMe and What Happens Next

The “Justice for Jameson” campaign was launched almost immediately after the shooting, with an initial goal of $120,000 to cover cremation costs and push for accountability. It blew past six figures in less than 24 hours and has continued climbing since.

The campaign description reads in part: “On June 13th, 2026, 10 minutes after celebrating the Knicks championship win, our dog was fatally shot right outside our home. Jameson was taken from us too soon.”

The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division is now reviewing the circumstances that led to the shooting. No further details have been released about what, if any, consequences the officers involved might face.

For now, Jameson’s family is left trying to process how a night meant for celebration ended the way it did, and an entire online community has decided that the least they can do is help cover the cost of saying goodbye.
