No More large-Sized Dogs In Bengaluru Apartments Says Civic Body

In Bengaluru, the civic body (BBMP) has decided that large-sized dogs and apartments don’t go together and has also proposed a new set of guidelines under which breeds like Great Dane, English Mastiff, Bull dog, Boxer, Rottweiler, St. Bernard, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever are off the list of allowed pets.

City’s civic body set new rules

The draft guidelines, also restricting the breeds that can be kept in apartments, include mandatory licensing, separate breeding licensee, and where not available, sterilization of pet dogs. Owners also face a penalty if they fail to clean up after their dogs in public spaces. Independent home owners will be able to own no more than three dogs.

However, Animal rights activists, say “the civic body is ignoring the main problem. The focus needs to be on breeders, many of whom are trading in breeds that are not suited for life in Bengaluru. What’s more, the city has emerged as a hotspot for illegal breeding of dogs.”

According to CUPA report

The Compassion Unlimited Plus Action brought out a report in 2016 on 15 illegal breeding centers across the city and the mushrooming of ‘puppy mills’. The report provided evidence of breeding centers operating out of residential terraces and small cramped rooms in busy markets. Puppies bred in inhumane conditions are sold on popular e-commerce sites.

R. Shantha Kumar, welfare officer, Animal Welfare Board of India said, “BBMP should stop such breeding in Sriramapuram, Russell Market and other areas. None of the breeders have licences. Officials need to shut them down and issue licences to only those meeting conditions. This will have a positive impact on pet owners.”
