Karnataka, India: After beating a hasty retreat one year ago in the face of intense opposition from the pet owners, the civic body in Bengaluru is all set to reboot its proposal for a pet dog licensing system. The draft rules will be published soon and opened for public consultation.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has held multiple meetings with the stakeholder including animal welfare organizations, rescuers, pet dog owners to redraft the rules.
The reason behind this was the earlier rules and regulations had controversial clauses. One of the most controversial clauses that faced stiff opposition was limiting the number of pet dogs per house. The owners were allowed to keep one per flat in group housing and three per independent house.
In new rules, each licensed pet dog will have a microchip with the owner’s detail along with vaccination records, which will help assign responsibility and hold pet owners accountable in case they abandon them.
