South Korea’s President Raises Dog Meat Ban

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in raised the issue to ban the eating of dogs in the country on Monday. He also said that this traditional practice is now becoming an international embarrassment.

Meat consumption has long been a part of South Korean cuisine, and around one million dogs are believed to be annually eaten. But the consumption has declined as more people embrace dogs as companions rather than livestock.

The practice is now a taboo among younger generations, and pressure from animal rights activists has also been mounting.

During a weekly meeting, President Moon told Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum “Hasn’t the time come to prudently consider prohibiting dog meat consumption”?

South Korea’s pet industry is on the rise with a growing number of people living with dogs at home which also includes the president.
