Major Pet Food Company Recalls Its Dog Food In The US

Recently, a major pet food company in the US recalled its 25 products in dog food category over concerns of containing excessive Vitamin D, which could be fatal for dogs.

There were a number of the company’s canned Prescription Diet and Science Diet foods that were recalled. According to USA today, Hill’s Pet Nutrition released a statement saying that a complaint about a dog exhibiting signs of high vitamin D levels has prompted its recall.

Dangers of excessive Vitamin D in Dogs

According to FDA, the dogs with higher intake of vitamin D can experience symptoms such as:

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive drooling
  • Weight loss

Extreme high doses of the vitamin D can also cause kidney failure in dogs.

Company Statement

According to USA Today, the company said in a statement that it has “isolated the error” and is implementing additional testing to prevent this from happening in the future. No dry dog food from the company was affected, according to the recall.

A journalist for the Washington Post shared a tweet after her dog died after eating company manufactured food.

Many pet owners commented about their pet deaths while eating the recalled foods on the company’s Facebook page.
