During a mountain hike; a woman shared her heart-pounding experience of her dog disappearing into a 32-foot hole. Hollie Veryard was initially perplexed about Indie, her spaniel, on Pen Pych mountain in Rhondda Cynon Taf. She immediately contacted rescuers when she realized that Indie had fallen into a deep hole.
Hollie, a 31-year-old from Verwood, Dorset, recalled her emotional state when Indie was finally rescued. The ordeal lasted six hours and began after she allowed Indie to roam freely.
“I kept calling and calling for her, but she didn’t respond, and I knew she wouldn’t just run off, as that’s not her nature,” Hollie explained. She returned to where Indie had vanished and noticed several holes in the ground. Fellow hikers attempted to assist, with one person even lowering themselves down the holes with someone holding their ankles.
“We discovered that she was down one of the holes, about 10 meters down on a small ledge,” Hollie said. “She kept lifting her head to look at me and would whimper whenever she couldn’t see me.”
The South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team, in collaboration with the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, carried out the rescue operation on the previous Saturday. Since the crevice was too narrow for anyone to descend, they fashioned a small noose around Indie and gently pulled her to safety.
Hollie described the moment when Indie was finally out of the hole as highly emotional, noting that Indie’s tail began to wag as soon as her feet touched the ground. The South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team commended the rescue effort as a remarkable team accomplishment.
