Pet Dog License And Breeder Registration Made Mandatory In Thiruvananthapuram

The government of Thiruvananthapuram made pet dog license and breeder registration mandatory in the city from today onward. The scheme has been established at government veterinary hospital, Pettah today by minister for AHD PK Raju.

According to the scheme

All the pet dog owners will have to take a license for keeping dogs by paying a fee of Rs. 100. The pet dog license has to be renewed annually.

Similarly for breeder registration, those who breed dogs for selling will have to apply for breeder registration. The fee has been fixed at Rs. 500. The breeder license fee will also have to be renewed annually.

Micro-chipping for stray dogs and pet dogs

The corporation will also introduce micro-chipping for stray dogs and pet dogs in the city as part of giving a unique ID to dogs. The dogs which undergo sterilization will be administered with anti-rabies vaccine and micro-chips will be inserted under their skin above the neck.

Dr. Prem Jain, senior veterinary surgeon, Pettah Hospital said that the corporation will conduct annual re-vaccination of dogs in the city.

“Although the vaccine being administered ensures three year immunity, we plan to re-vaccinate dogs within two years. In order to do so, we have to identify the dogs which were sterilized and released in a particular area for which microchips will come handy,” said Prem Jain.

The project is being implemented at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. The city corporation has recruited 5 doctors and additional dog catchers for the successful implementation of the programme.

Mayor V K Prasanth said that under the new scheme, corporation aims to sterilize 20 dogs per day.

Facilities are being arranged at Thiruvallom vet hospital for the project which include operation theatre with four tables, kennels with a housing capacity for 150 dogs and other required infrastructure.
