Dandie Dinmont Terriers originally were bred to hunt otter and badger. Nicknamed the gentleman of the terrier family, he is calm and reserved, yet retains his terrier tenacity and love of the hunt. His small size and moderate exercise needs make him well suited to both city and country homes.

The little Dandie Dinmont Terrier or DDT for short, is a breed which originates from Scotland and has an ardent band of followers who are buoyed by the fact that this captivating breed are officially on the UK Kennel Club's list of vulnerable native breeds, which means that there are fewer than 300 pups registered each year.

The DDT originated in Scotland in the 1700's, and is thought to be named after a character in a book ('Guy Mannering' written by Walter Scott). The hero in this book, Dandie Dinmont, was an owner of 6 little dogs fitting the description of the DDT who were thought to be the result of crossbreeding between local terrier type dogs and the Dachshund.

They were bred for hunting otters and badgers and as they grew in popularity the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club was formed in 1875. The breed standard was written by the clubs founding members and by the next year they had been universally agreed upon.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a medium purebred known for being affectionate, aggressive, independent, intelligent, loving, loyal, quiet, and social.

The Dandie Dinmont terrier is friendly, playful and devoted. The Dandie is an alert watchdog and, while not high strung or noisy, gives a surprisingly loud bark.This breed is not at all snappy, however, and makes an excellent companion for children. This dog is also calmer than most other terrier breeds.

Training & Intelligence
Dandies are affectionate, lively dogs. Like many terriers, they also are independent and determined. They are very intelligent and typically are bold in defending their territory and family.Training will be difficult, which might not be suitable for a first time dog owner. Patience and perseverance are required to adequately train it. Professional obedience schools can also be helpful.

Dandies are healthy and sturdy breed . Generally a dog takes around 18 months to reach his or her full height and structure. It is advisable to breed your dogs after at least two years of age. If you are a first timer at breeding then taking a vets help.
