On Monday, a video purportedly showing a police officer striking a stray dog with a stick went viral on social media, prompting Delhi Police to identify the individual and transfer him.
Harish Kumar, claiming to be an animal activist, posted a video on Twitter on Monday afternoon showing a police officer whacking a dog with a staff. On Monday, Kumar added, the event occurred in lane 44 in the Jaffrabad region of northeast Delhi.
On Twitter, the Delhi Police confirmed that they were aware of the video and that they were taking action against the offending officer.
The defaulting police officer is an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Jaffrabad police station, according to a law enforcement officer. In the meantime, he has been dispatched to the district lines (punishment posting). Even though police did not release an official response, reports on social media accounts stated that the ASI claimed he hit the animal because it attacked him.
Other animal advocates uploaded a video of the puppy at the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre on Tuesday morning. The dog’s eye was wounded, according to a volunteer at the facility. “His leg is bruised but not broken.” An X-ray will be taken tomorrow to assess whether there is a hairline fracture. He has a normal temperature but is not eating,” he said, seeking anonymity.
