Animal Activists Want A Ban On Online Sale Of Animals In Hyderabad

Hyderabad animal activities have raised their voice over a ban of sale of the animals on the internet. According to them, the online sale of animals without a basic background check of the buyer is reducing the lives of animals to mere commodities.

Online sale of “pets” is uncontrolled. However, animal rights body, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India, has sent letters to online portals such as Olx and Quickr, asking them to ban such sale of animals.

P Teja, an animal rights activist and dog trainer said that the main problem is lack of checks and balances online.

“Most of those who put up dogs for sale online are middlemen who are appointed by illegal breeders. Mandates that state that puppies can be sold only after three months of age, after being with their mothers initially for health reasons (to receive antibodies through milk), are completely ignored,” Teja says.

Most of the dogs online are kidnapped from other pet owners

“When we receive a complaint about lost dogs, we usually run a search on online platforms. There have been instances when we have been able to track a couple of such lost dogs and reunited them with their actual owners,” Teja said.

However, Quickr recently said that they fully support the activists in eradicating cruelty towards animals and that they are working on doing the right thing, activists say that no concrete action has been taken.

“Online sale of animals is rampant even on social media platforms,” said Lalitha Reddy, a pet owner.
